LITERACY PROGRAM

MOVING FORWARD

DEVELOPING LITERACY SKILLS FOR ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

The Surrey Association for Community Living is proud to be engaged in a two-year literacy pilot project, developing and implementing a literacy curriculum for adults with developmental disabilities.  This project, the first of its kind in Canada, is sponsored by Human Resources and Social Development Canada in conjunction with the Surrey Association for Community Living. The curriculum learning outcomes for this project address: reading, viewing, writing, representing, listening, speaking/communicating, numeracy and computer use.   The curriculum focuses on the literacy skills required by an adult with developmental disabilities in daily life: as a lifelong learner; as a member of a social network (family member, friend, and caregiver); as a resident; as an employee or a volunteer; and as a community member. We are documenting the results of this pilot project and will share the curriculum and assessment procedures used on the National Literacy Database website.

Eligibility and Participation:

The individuals eligible for the classes are those adults with a developmental disability who demonstrate a desire to improve their literacy skills.  They must meet the same criteria as set by CLBC for support. The individuals must be able to participate in the classroom curriculum as well as a community project, work or volunteer experience to practice the skills learned during the classes.

* We will not provide one to one support for those individuals interested in participating in the literacy classes.

Class Size and Schedules:

We will accommodate at least 25 different individuals in each semester. Class size will range from 8 -12 adults in each class, depending upon the needs of each group.
